S. Korea, Japan have world’s fastest web links

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

A recent report has found that the East Asian countries led by South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan are the best wired in the world with the highest number of fast broadband connections to the Internet.

South Korea boasts the world’s highest average connection speed at 14.6 Megabytes per second (Mbps) and also has six of Asia’s 10 cities with the fastest link-ups, all with average speeds above 15 Mbps.

According to the report by US-based network provider Akamai Technologies, Japan had the second highest average connection speed of 7.9 Mbps, followed by the Chinese territory of Hong Kong with 7.6 Mbps.

The other countries in the top ten are Romania, followed by Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark and the Czech Republic, with the United States at 18th place, with an average speed of 3.9 Mbps.

The survey classifies “broadband” connections as those of two Mbps or more, and “high broadband” as five Mbps or over, while link-ups at 20 Mbps and better were categorized as “extremely high speed connectivity.”

The report said, South Korea, 74 percent of connections were “high broadband,” the world’s top rate, while the figure was 60 percent in Japan, followed by Hong Kong with 46 percent.

The United States came 12th, with just 24 percent of its connections at five Mbps or more. Worldwide, the high broadband percentage was 19 percent.

Akamai’s ‘State of the Internet’ report for the third quarter of 2009, said the growing demand for online high-definition video content is driving demand for faster connections.

As the quantity of HD-quality media increases over time and the consumption of that media increases, end users are likely to require ever-increasing amounts of bandwidth, said the report.

Nokia expands patent dispute beyond Apple iPhone

    Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Nokia Corp. is broadening its legal disputes beyond Apple iPhone that it already had, saying almost all of the company’s other product also violate the Finnish phone maker’s patents.

Nokia has filed a complaint against Apple with the US International Trade Commission, alleging Apple’s iPhone, iPods and computers all violate Nokia’s intellectual property rights, Nokia said Tuesday.

At issue are key features found in Apple products, including aspects of user interface, cameras, and antenna and power management technologies, Nokia said. The company claims that the technologies in question help cut manufacturing costs, reduce gadget size and prolong battery life.

A household name in Asia and Europe, Nokia is a smaller player in the United States, where its smart phones face tough competition from Apple’s iPhone and Research in Motion Ltd.’s BlackBerry devices. Nokia, the world’s largest cell phone maker, has cautioned that its own market share volume, currently at some 38 percent, would be flat next year.

Espoo-based company, Finland, has already sued Apple in U.S. District Court in Wilmington, Del., over the massively popular iPhone, claiming it infringes on 10 of its patents related to phone calls and Wi-Fi access.

Apple has denied the charges and this month countered with its own lawsuit in the Delaware court, saying Nokia has copied aspects of the iPhone in its devices. Apple claims Nokia is violating its patent rights on technology for connecting phones to computers, teleconferencing and touch-screen menus, among other things.

Federal lawsuits allow companies to seek monetary damages and court orders to end certain practices. With complaints before the U.S. International Trade Commission, companies could get an order for Customs to stop imports of products made with the disputed technology. Many of Apple’s products and parts are made overseas.

Apple, which has its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., did not return messages seeking comment Tuesday.

Barnes & Noble compensates buyers for late Nook

      Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Bookseller Barnes & Noble Inc plans to issue $100 gift certificates by December 24 for the people who won’t receive its Nook electronic reader
, if they had ordered it on time.

Earlier this month, the company, which has been bedeviled with problems in producing and delivering the e-reader in time for the holiday season, postponed the in-store debut of the $259 device.

According to Barnes & Noble, the delays affected “a very small percentage of customers” who may not receive their Nook in time for Christmas Eve, on Thursday.

A spokeswoman of Barnes & Noble said they are working very hard to keep up with the demand and to get all Nook orders out the door and to customers on or before December 24.

Affected customers were notified on Friday, the spokeswoman added.

In October, Barnes & Noble launched its Nook e-reader, but in November it said that it had sold out because of strong demand. The bookseller has said that orders placed after November 20 would not be filled until January.

Barnes & Noble shares were up 62 cents, or 3.4 percent, at $19.01 in morning New York Stock Exchange trading.
