Barnes & Noble compensates buyers for late Nook

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Bookseller Barnes & Noble Inc plans to issue $100 gift certificates by December 24 for the people who won’t receive its Nook electronic reader
, if they had ordered it on time.

Earlier this month, the company, which has been bedeviled with problems in producing and delivering the e-reader in time for the holiday season, postponed the in-store debut of the $259 device.

According to Barnes & Noble, the delays affected “a very small percentage of customers” who may not receive their Nook in time for Christmas Eve, on Thursday.

A spokeswoman of Barnes & Noble said they are working very hard to keep up with the demand and to get all Nook orders out the door and to customers on or before December 24.

Affected customers were notified on Friday, the spokeswoman added.

In October, Barnes & Noble launched its Nook e-reader, but in November it said that it had sold out because of strong demand. The bookseller has said that orders placed after November 20 would not be filled until January.

Barnes & Noble shares were up 62 cents, or 3.4 percent, at $19.01 in morning New York Stock Exchange trading.

    Insignia 52-Inch HDTV for $1000

    Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Best Buy has the Insignia 52-Inch NS-LCD52HD-09 HDTV on sale for $1000, $600 off the original price (and $400 off our review unit’s price), plus free shipping.

This 52-inch Insignia is not the greatest HDTV, but it’s also not the worst. It supports full 1080p resolution, has a 1500:1 contrast ratio, and features three HDMI input ports.

Test at the lab has found both the image and sound quality lacking, but the reviewer raved that the remote is “almost perfect.” All in all, this HDTV has always been a great deal for the price–and now it’s even better.

Facebook forms board on online safety

      Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Facebook, the social networking site, said it has formed an advisory board comprising five Internet safety organizations to consult on issues related to online safety.

Concerning online safety, Facebook plans to meet board members regularly in order to review existing safety resources it provides its users, develop new materials and seek advice on general safety best practices.

Board’s first task will be to oversee an overhaul of safety content in Facebook’s help center.

The organizations on the board are Common Sense Media, ConnectSafely, WiredSafety, Childnet International and The Family Online Safety Institute.

Facebook and rival MySpace, owned by News Corp, have deals with state attorneys general to increase efforts to protect their youngest members from abuse.
