Xbox Live lifts taboos on race-sexual preference

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Now, Xbox Live users are free to express their race, religion, nationality and sexual orientation in profiles at the popular online videogame community.

Microsoft modified the Xbox Live code of conduct for some 23 million members of the network accessed through Xbox 360videogame consoles.

According to Xbox Live general manager Marc Whitten, who said in a letter to users of the service, some of these expressions of self-identification were not allowed in Gamertags or profiles to prevent the use of these terms as insults or slurs.

He also added that, however, we have since heard feedback from our customers that while the spirit of this approach was genuine, it inadvertently excluded a part of our Xbox Live community.

Gamertags are names players use to identify themselves in the online community.

According to Whitten, the policy change is accompanied by increased enforcement to prevent people abusing the once-banned terms.

Xbox Live provides a social network where videogame lovers can play with others online, download extra content for titles, share pictures, stream films, and other take part in other activities.

Whitten said, “our diversity is what makes us strong: diversity in gaming and entertainment options and diversity in the people that make up this amazing community”.

Apple IPhone With Wi-Fi May Soon Enter China

    Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

China Unicom, the only mobile network operator selling iPhones in China, is in talks with Apple to sell a version of the popular smartphone with Wi-Fi, something the companies could not do previously due to government regulations.

In the success of the iPhone, the Wi-Fi is seen as important in China because many people want to use the devices to surf the Web, but don’t want to pay higher data rates for using the mobile network.

China so far has required mobile phones with Wi-Fi also to support WAPI (WLAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure), a homegrown security protocol. Versions of the iPhone on sale now in China do not offer Wi-Fi.

Chang Xiaobing, chairman and CEO of China Unicom, outside an event in Beijing, said we have been holding talks with Apple in this area.

Chang did not give a timetable for any release. When asked if the phone will come with WAPI, he said the phone will satisfy demands in the Chinese market.

      Skype gets into Nokia smartphones

      Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Skype, an Internet telephony firm, took a second major leap into the wireless market in just a few weeks, unveiling software from top phone maker Nokia Oyj which could run on more than 200 million smartphones around the world.

For Symbian software, the new Skype is available for free download from Nokia’s Ovi Store to consumers globally.

Skype made its first major leap into cellphones in mid February, striking a deal with the largest U.S. mobile carrier Verizon Wireless.

Skype’s free calls on computers have become an Internet phenomenon since start in 2003 and it has some 520 million registered users around the globe. But so far it has made little progress in wireless, as most telecoms operators have seen it as a risk to their core business of voice calls.

According to Nokia, it was seeing in total around 1.5 million downloads a day from Ovi Store, compared with around 1 million three months ago.
