Xbox 360 RROD Troubleshooting Tips

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Even though it’s not something to look forward to, things do break, and the Xbox 360 isn’t an exception. Sometimes, consoles will simply stop working, as the hardware fails and it’s not something to be surprised about.

According to some estimates, almost one third of all the Xbox 360’s that were sold since the launch in 2005, had a problem with their hardware at one time or another. If you do a bit of Xbox 360 troubleshooting you will probably find that the problem isn’t serious. Usually the problem is overheating, caused by too much gameplay.

Microsoft knows about the problem of overheating and they tell owners of Xbox 360 consoles what they should do to address it. Experts in Xbox 360 consoles say that the solution to the three glowing red lights is unplugging the console and plugging it back after that.

You should do this until the green light shows up, so you know that the Xbox 360 has rebooted properly. In many cases, this will solve your problem. In other cases, shutting it down for some time will allow it to cool down and that is sufficient. If it happens regularly, you should try to take the troubleshooting to the next level.

This is the moment when most people will turn to the Internet to find the solution for their problem. You will find a number of good ideas online, but you will also find a few bad ones. Ideally, you should look at the Microsoft site, and see what their experts have to say about the error you encountered. It’s possible that they have a software update for your problem, which you can install. Overall, Microsoft has a pretty good record when it comes to keeping their consoles in working order. When software problems appear, a fix is usually released pretty fast.

If a simple software update will not fix your problem, you should probably send the unit to a service, to be repaired. The problem is that you will stay without a console for up to six weeks and you don’t really have a choice in the matter, unless you know how to fix a gaming console. Ideally, the console will still be under warranty, so the cost will be zero to you, as Microsoft will cover everything.

With a bit of luck, all you need to do to fix a console is to allow the system to cool off by unplugging it. If this doesn’t fix the problem, you should either get it replaced, or fixed.

Xbox 360 RROD – What causes RROD on your Xbox?

    Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

A problem that comes with Xbox 360 is quite common and it got even its own name from the gamers in the community.

The name given was the red ring of death. The name of this error comes from the red lights, which change from the regular green ones. These lights are located at the front of the Xbox console. The ring of death is the error that appears in most cases and it’s usually caused by the heat which builds up inside the console.

It’s only normal that the console gives heat as it works, but the problem is with its heat sinks, which should dissipate it, but don’t seem to be able to do their job. The solder used in the console is lead free, so heat can affect it in time, causing it to become brittle and get hairline cracks. This can make the console unusable because of breaks of the circuits.

A red light that is flashing might indicate that a failure of the hardware has occurred, which can be caused by the processing unit overheating. You should put the console on a box, with plenty of free space around, so cool air can get to it easily. This way the chances of issues with hardware failure are greatly reduced. You shouldn’t put it in a TV cabinet or a cupboard, since the cool air wouldn’t be sufficiently available to the console and its cooling vents.

Sometimes, people confuse the red ring of death with another similar problem, which has four red lights that are flashing. This error is caused by the AV cable, which isn’t plugged into the console. As soon as you put back the cable in the console, your problem should be fixed.

If your main problem is the dreaded red ring of death, you might be lucky. Microsoft has an extended warranty these days, increased to three years, for the consoles that have this issue, as long as you haven’t opened the console and you’re the one that bought it. The repair time is quite big though, but at least it will be fixed by the manufacturer.

The other thing you can do is doing the repair by yourself, while using a repair guide. There are great guides available, with video instructions on how to do repairs step by step, with some basic tools that you have in your house. The advantage is that you can repair a console in a few hours, instead of waiting a few weeks to come back from repairs.

Xbox 360 Overheating – How to avoid it

      Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

The Microsoft Xbox 360 console is a great gaming gadget, so the fact that there were millions of them sold all over the world is not a surprise.

Still, these consoles came with their own set of issues. One of these issues was the so called red ring of death, which got its name from the 360 gaming community. This issue got its name from the green lights of the console becoming red, which would indicate a failure of the hardware.

There were thousands of gaming consoles that had this problem and in most cases the console had a problem dissipating the heat that built up, because of the processing units. The thought here is that the design of the console is to blame, since it is so basic, and the heat sinks are too small. This would mean that they can’t cope with the amount of heat that is being produced while you play. Anyway, you should know that this problem is well known and it has a number of possible solutions.

One of the things you should do is not to use an Xbox 360 in a small place, like in a TV unit or in a cupboard. You need plenty of fresh air around the console, and ideally it should also be cool air. The best position for it would be in the room’s centre, on a box that is upturned. This would let the cool air get to the console’s cooling vents. That’s why you shouldn’t put the console on a carpeted floor.

While this tip might seem a bit crazy, it will actually allow you to play on it without any errors caused by overheating. The tip would be to play in sessions of a few hours, with breaks if it takes longer than that. This will allow you to play on your Xbox without any overheating issues.

If you happen to be one of the gamers unlucky enough to own a console that suffers from errors of red lights, you shouldn’t stress. These are plenty of resources that help you find a solution to this problem, so it doesn’t mean that you paid for the console and got nothing in return.

You can find a number of resources that give self help tips, so you will be able to fix overheated consoles with ease. Since there are so many consoles that had problems with overheating, the procedures of repair are proven to work. All you need is to try one of them and see if it applies to your situation.
